Motorized Shade Integration — WaveLinx + Somfy RTS

Texas · Products: PNL-GTWY-010V-SMFYRST-120V-NEMA1 (0-10V Somfy RTS Interface)

The Challenge

A multi-tenant commercial office building specified WaveLinx Pro for all lighting control. The architect also called for motorized roller shades on the perimeter offices for glare control and IECC daylighting compliance. The shade contractor was supplying Somfy RTS motors — a wireless radio protocol with no native 0-10V input. The building owner wanted unified control: one system, one wall station, lights and shades responding together. Wiring a separate shade control system would mean a second network, second programming visit, and a more complex user experience.

The Solution

Nuvospec designed and built a custom solution featuring:

  • Nuvospec's 0-10V Somfy RTS Interface installed in the electrical room alongside the WaveLinx equipment
  • One dedicated WaveLinx Pro dimming zone (0-10V output) connected to the gateway per shade group
  • Gateway pre-programmed to send Raise, Lower, and Stop commands to the Somfy RTS motors at defined 0-10V threshold levels
  • Two independent 0-10V inputs used for dual motor groups — east and west facade shades on separate zones
  • Shades and lights controlled from the same WaveLinx wall stations already installed
  • For projects with ILC LightSync instead of WaveLinx Pro: the CUST-CCH-SHADE-PNL provides three motor groups via ILC Dry Contact Output modules — same end result, different control backbone

The Result

  • No second control system: shades integrated into the existing WaveLinx infrastructure at list price under $1,000
  • IECC daylighting compliance: automated shade sequencing tied to occupancy and daylight scenes already programmed in WaveLinx
  • Installation time: gateway mounted, wired to existing WaveLinx zone output, shade motors paired via RTS — under two hours total
  • User experience: occupants raise/lower shades from the same wall stations they use for lighting — no learning curve
  • Replicable per floor: each floor's shade group gets its own gateway; no network infrastructure changes required

Key Takeaway

Any project with Somfy RTS motorized shades and a 0-10V lighting control system — WaveLinx, ILC, or any other — has an opportunity for this gateway. It's a sub-$1,000 add to the line card that closes the gap between two systems the engineer already specified. Ask the shade contractor what motor protocol they're using before the project bids.
